Identifying Your Target Readers To Help Sell More Books On Amazon Kindle

When it comes to finding readers for your Amazon Kindle books, you need to be as specific and clear as possible. Considering who you are writing for throughout the writing process is going t make sure that you write something that people actually want to read.

You might have a great story in you, and you may be the best person to tell that story. However, if you aren’t willing to do research, ask questions and reach out to your target audience and keep them in mind when crafting your work, you may end up writing a book that doesn’t quite fit anywhere, and then you’ll find it incredibly challenging to write it. 

If you only wait until after your book is published to consider your readers, you are missing a trick. The more you can understand your target audience’s preferences, the easier it will be to write a book they will be interested in buying, and promote it to them so that they become aware of it. 

So where can you start? First, you should consider your primary target audience. This is your audience in the most specific sense. Don’t think about anyone and everyone who might, just possibly, pick up your book. Instead, try to refine this down to those who are most likely to be actively searching for a book like yours.

Asking yourself the following questions can help:

What kind of book have you written? Are there particular themes in your book? What kind of people are most likely to appreciate the kind of content or story or the themes that are most prominent in your book. Who is your book most applicable for? Is there a particular type of person who is likely to benefit in any way from what you have written?

Answering the above can help you define your audience’s identity more clearly. Once you have done so you can drill down even further by considering the demographics of your target readers ie. their age, interests, location, habits, likes and dislikes, and so on.

This isn’t always the easiest thing to do. But if you give discovering your target readers the time and attention that you should, you will have a much better idea of not only how to craft a book they will enjoy but also to market to them in a way that grabs their attention.

If you are finding this too challenging you could also try the following to help give you a better idea of the types of audiences out there. 

Search Amazon for the most established and best-selling authors and books that are similar to your own. Then do further research to discover more books that are selling well – look for those that already have a decent following – what makes these books stand out, what common themes do they have? What features do they have that make them appealing? 

Once you have identified a list then use social media platforms as well as others such as Goodreads to see what fans are saying about them and how they are engaging with their audience. Check out their interactions and write down all the information that can help you such as the fan’s demographics, their tastes, and any trends that you notice.  This can help you build up a clear picture of the profile of your book’s ideal audience. 

Defining your target readers is a crucial and essential task that every writer should undertake. The sooner you begin in the book creation process, the more helpful this will be when it comes to crafting, structuring, and marketing your book.
