Kindle’s ‘Look Inside The Book’ Feature

The Look Inside the Book feature on Amazon Kindle is one that all writers should be aware of and put to good use. This is a program that Amazon has created to allow readers to sample chapters and snippets from your novel to virtually ‘try before they buy.’

When using this feature, the book displayed to customers will have a ‘Look Inside’ arrow on the top right of the book cover image, which, when clicked upon, will allow readers to preview some of the book in order to decide whether it is right for them.

How Look Inside the Book works

Using the Look Inside the Book feature is straightforward. All authors who upload their books to Amazon Kindle will automatically be enrolled in this feature, though you may have to wait a few days before it displays on the Amazon site. For paperbacks, it can take up to 10 business days to appear, and for an Ebook, it’s up to 8 business days after the date of publication.

The amount of the book that is shown can also vary.

So why use the Look Inside the Book feature?

There are lots of reasons why this feature can help authors books their book sales – these include:

Offering point of sale sampling – this increases trust. Essentially if they like what they read, they are more likely to buy.

Customers can also check both the printed and Kindle versions to decide which they would prefer.

Customers can read the first chapter or so, or instead view different random pages of the story, or search for something specific that is of particular interest for them.

Customers can also view and compare books that cover similar topics or are in the same genre.

This feature includes 1-Click purchasing making it super easy and streamlined for customers to buy. The Add to Cart or Buy with 1-Click button is on display throughout the customer’s previewing experience, so there is no need to return to the main sales page should they decide to purchase.

Using this feature results in better search results as if the words customers use match the words inside the book, it is more likely to come up as a result.

What’s the difference between this feature and the Kindle Instant Book Preview?

There is little difference between the two on the surface as they will both display the same content. However, the content is rendered in Kindle Instant Book Preview in a slightly different way – this is simply due to the different types of technology used for the different features.

With Kindle Instant Preview, it is possible to use an embedded link on the web or share a link via email, text, and so on. Anyone with the link can click on it and will be directed to the content straight away.

The benefits of using the Look Inside feature speak for themselves, so make sure that you are aware of the customer’s ability to do this and pay attention to keywords and phrases use in the opening of your book, and be sure to make those first chapters sparkle!
